Kurta Sizing Guide for Export Orders: India vs UAE vs International Sizes

How Indian kurta sizing maps to UAE, UK, and international sizes — and how to specify correctly so your export orders land right the first time.

Sizing is the most common source of friction in ethnic wear export orders. Indian manufacturers grade to Indian market expectations — but UAE, UK, and African buyers have different body measurement distributions and different size label conventions. Getting this right before production starts eliminates returns and reshipping costs.

Export sizing tips by market

Always provide measurements, not just size labels
UAE and international buyers can't map Indian size labels intuitively. Put chest and length measurements on your hangtag or include a size guide in the package.
Run sizes larger for Gulf market
UAE buyers from South Asian and Arab backgrounds tend to prefer relaxed fits. Consider offering one size up compared to your India range, or grading your XL and XXL with more ease.
Include plus sizes for Africa and Gulf
African and Gulf markets have stronger demand for 3XL and 4XL than Indian domestic market. If exporting to these regions, include at least 3XL in your size run.
Confirm length preferences by market
Kurta length preferences vary: Indian buyers often prefer knee-length (44–46 inches). Gulf Arab customers may prefer longer lengths (48–52 inches). Confirm with your buyer before grading.
Use centimetres for international buyers
Inches are used domestically in India. For export orders, provide measurements in centimetres on documentation, tech packs, and hangtags — it's the international standard.

Frequently asked questions

How do Indian kurta sizes compare to UAE sizes?

Indian kurta sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) are generally smaller than UAE/Gulf market expectations. What an Indian brand calls L (chest 40 inches) often corresponds to M in Gulf sizing. UAE buyers from the South Asian diaspora often order one size up from their Indian preference. For export orders targeting UAE, always provide actual cm/inch measurements and let the buyer map to their preferred size, rather than relying on size labels alone.

What measurements should be included in a kurta size chart?

A complete kurta size chart should include: chest (measured flat across chest, doubled for circumference), length (shoulder seam to hem), shoulder width (seam to seam), sleeve length (shoulder seam to sleeve end), and sleeve opening. For kurta sets with palazzo or pyjama bottoms: waist (flat, doubled), hip (flat, doubled), inseam, and bottom hem circumference.

Should I use Indian size labels or XS/S/M/L for export kurtas?

For export orders targeting UAE, UK, USA, or international markets, always use XS/S/M/L/XL labels with a measurement conversion chart — not Indian numeric sizes (36, 38, 40, 42). Include both the size label and actual chest/length measurements on your hangtag or packaging. International buyers are unfamiliar with Indian numeric sizing and it creates confusion at point of sale.
